Erisianisms: The Andro-Aperture Project - my gut reaction
You know, I WANT to be wholeheartedly in favor of Kitty Stryker’s Andro-Aperture Project. I think she’s a way cool chick & has a great eye for creating hot smut. I agree with the principles that the world could use more imagery of the sort she is looking for, and that it’d be swell to encourage…
“No, what this is about is MARKETING: framing the produced images in such a way as to seduce buyers who have been told their entire lives that they couldn’t possibly like/buy porn, for one reason or another.”
Yes, this! And also helping interested photographers find the markets for their work, and also try to get galleries and sex/bdsm spaces to show something other than naked, slender, kneeling women. That’d be nice.
I think that you need to specify that this is about the female gaze of female-identified people who like male-identified bodies. That doesn’t necessarily translate to “all women” or ignore queerness within that female gaze- it’s just a specific group of people. I strongly feel, as I say many places, that the queer, androgynous and genderqueer gazes are being given material by some awesome people, and that rather than try to emulate them, I’d rather send people into that their way. This project covers something different in what I see as a spectrum of identities and desires.
I certainly have never and would never say female = has a vagina and/or XX chromosomes and male = has a cock and/or XY chromosomes. What I do say is that while I believe gender is a social construct, an awful lot of people place themselves in the categories of “male” and “female”, whether cis or trans. And that’s ok. Not everyone has to identify as queer and genderqueer.
I’m doing this project because I feel like in the name of being political and feminist there’s a push to ignore women who like looking at men in favor of queer sex. I love queer sex. But I don’t want the only representations of straight sex to be made, marketed, controlled and consumed by straight men.
That last line is just the mot juste. Here it is again, because I really just want to type it out:
